Burundi and the broader Great Lakes Region are often affected by historical tensions, youth marginalization, poverty, weak border controls, and fragile institutions—all of which create fertile ground for violence and organized crime networks. These crimes transcend borders, but their impacts are deeply felt at the community level: insecurity, exploitation of women and children, forced migration, trauma, and destabilization.
The region’s history of armed conflict, porous borders, and weak justice systems leaves communities exposed to cycles of violence and exploitation. Transnational criminal networks prey on this instability, exploiting vulnerable youth and women. RECOVI understands that peace cannot be achieved or sustained without addressing both internal vulnerabilities and external criminal threats.
In Burundi and much of the East African region, women and youth continue to face entrenched social, economic, and political exclusion. Limited access to land, finance, education, and leadership opportunities perpetuates poverty and gender-based inequalities. In post-conflict settings like Burundi, these challenges are further compounded by legacies of violence, weak institutional support, and high youth unemployment rates.
The RECOVI Women and Youth Empowerment Program aims to unlock the untapped potential of women and young people as catalysts for peace, innovation, and sustainable development. By investing in capacity-building, economic resilience, and civic engagement, this program creates pathways for inclusive participation, economic self-sufficiency, and local leadership in both rural and urban communities.
Burundi’s children, especially those in rural areas, face multiple threats to their rights and well-being—ranging from school dropout, abuse, child labor, statelessness, and lack of legal protection. These challenges are shared across the East African region, where conflict, poverty, and fragile education systems undermine children’s ability to thrive.
The Child Education and Human Rights Promotion Program is RECOVI’s response to these urgent challenges. By protecting children’s rights, investing in inclusive education, and strengthening local protection mechanisms, RECOVI seeks to build a generation of empowered children who are informed, resilient, and capable of shaping a peaceful future for their communities.
This program seeks to strengthen community resilience in vulnerable areas by integrating Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies with the promotion of mental and oral health. Disasters—whether natural or man-made—often have a profound impact not only on physical infrastructure but also on the psychological and health well-being of affected populations.
In Burundi and similar contexts, affected individuals—especially women, children, and displaced persons—face increased risks of trauma, stress disorders, depression, and neglect of oral hygiene during and after crises. RECOVI’s program recognizes that true resilience goes beyond rebuilding homes; it includes restoring minds, ensuring dignity, and promoting holistic health. Thus, we aim to address these dimensions simultaneously.
RECOVI values all National, Regional, International Partnerships and Collaborations. We sincere express a splendid gratitude to our past and current partners for they are mostly impacting the change of the World we need through RECOVI's initiatives. The togetherness is highly counted as the only environment of changing from the worst to wellness.
